Will I be able to open a bank account even if my credit rating is dreadful?

My finances are in chaos as I've been putting off the day when I do something about them for years. Before I write to the banks and other lenders I was thinking of opening up an account with another bank so that at least I have an emergency fund. Will there be banks who will take me as a customer even though I expect my credit rating to be dreadful?

Most if not all banks will let you have a "basic" bank account. At first it is likely that you will have no overdraft facilities, credit card or cheque book. You should however get a debit card and cash card.

You can also open an account at a building society.
