My debts are worrying me and I need to deal with them: where do I start?
I have credit card debts, an overdraft, mortgage arrears of 2 months and I am behind with my electricity payments and payments on my Council Tax. Where do I start?
Prioritise your debts. Telephone, Ee-mail, or write to the companies or authorities concerned. Seek free advice from the C.A.B or National Debtline or any local charitable or non-profit organisation. Maybe you can get benefits.
However overwhelming the debt situation might seem there will be a solution even if now that seems impossible.
Non payment of Council Tax (and TV licence) can result in bailiffs coming round to where you live. As can non-payment of VAT, NI and Income tax so deal with these first.
Non payment of mortgages and rent can result in repossession or eviction.
Non payment of electric and gas can result in the supply being cut off without the need for the energy company to go to court.
Credit card debts are unsecured and the payments can often be reduced by writing to the lenders concerned with the purpose of them freezing the interest by submitting a debt management plan (DMP).
Your water cannot be cut off.
Before you start get all your agreements checked for validity. We run a free loan validity checking service which may be able to get some of your loans cancelled and money back.
