I sold a car via Ebay and the buyer has now told me the head gasket has blown and he wants me to re-imburse him the cost of fixing this or he will take action against me. What is my position legally?

I recently sold a car via Ebay. The buyer was happy, took the car for a test drive, paid cash and took the car away. The following day he contacted me saying the head gasket had blown which is going to cost £780 and he wants me to re-imburse him for this cost or he will take legal action against me. What is my position legally?

As you were a private seller as opposed to a trade seller the Sale of Goods Act does not apply to you and it is a question of buyer beware. You consequently do not need to refund the buyer any money.
